Toyota 86 2025: Price, consumption, picture, technical data.

Maybe the name Toyota 86 sounds new to you, and it should be, but it’s actually an old and familiar car that has changed brand names. Scion is discontinued and will offer its last model at the New York Auto Show, but some of its products will live on as they are overtaken by Toyota.

One of these products is the Toyota 86, formerly known as the Scion FR-S. New images and information about this car have been released, and the latest information says that we can officially see it at the upcoming NY Auto Show.

It was not planned for the car making the transition from Scion to Toyota to change its name, but it was noted that they eventually decided for the car to have a global name and this was done due to the high demand for sports cars.

Will Toyota give the former FR-S model the recognition it deserves? We hope the name change isn’t the only thing they’re doing. Right now, we don’t have the full list of changes made, but there are many things that are already known. As the release date gets closer, we’ll be able to see a lot more of the Toyota 86 model.

When is the release date of the Toyota 86?

The new model of the Toyota 86 will be unveiled at the same show where Scion offers its final products. The New York Auto Show marks the end of Scion, but also the beginning of Toyota’s overtaking. The future 86 model will be seen here for the first time, while the release date will be set sometime in the future. The most obvious choice is that it will be released by the end of the year.

What will be the Toyota 86 price?

Prices will already be known when the Toyota 86 is presented for the first time in New York. The car will have a base MSRP of €26,255 (Euro) with the six-speed manual transmission, while the six-speed automatic transmission will have a price of €26,975 (Euro).

What are the Toyota 86 exterior updates?

Although the exterior of the Toyota 86 will change somewhat, it still has many parts that make it recognizable as an FR-S model. The hood and front fender position are still the same. The headlight assembly is still constructed the same, however, such inclusions as LEDs are added. At the bottom, there is a much larger grille combined with black decorative inserts. It still looks sporty, but in our opinion, it looks much better than the previous model.

The side view does not show many differences from the previous model, but the vent inserts on the fenders have changed drastically. The side mirror is the same and the same goes for the side windows. The car is used on twisted 10-spoke alloy wheels for driving and they come in 17 or 18-inch sizes.

The rear has the same taillights with LED units. The rear fascia has cleaner body lines while the rear diffuser is familiar but still different. All in all, the changes here may be minor but they make the car look a bit more aggressive compared to last time.

Interior design

Although the interior of the Toyota 86 resembles the car it replaces, many new features have still been added to it. The general design is the same, but the center air vents are positioned a little higher and also appear more. The instrument cluster is the same as the FR-S model, but there are some new features for the steering wheel. We still have the round three-spoke wheel, but it has new audio control buttons on the left spoke.

The entire dashboard and door panels are now made from a soft-touch material called ‘Grandlux’. The car also uses silver contrast stitching to tie the materials together and the same goes for the steering wheel and gear knob. In the dashboard, you’ll also see a new Pioneer touchscreen unit that looks a lot fresher compared to the last model.

Power plant changes

The folks at Toyota haven’t released any information about the Toyota 86 engine choices. We may be looking at the same V-6 model that was used in the FR-S car, but there will be some updates to the powertrain that should address output. The chassis has been tweaked and we’re looking at a car with better handling. Now they’re making it easy to distribute the 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque that the engine makes.

0-62 mph per hour acceleration time?

As far as has been reported, despite the powertrain changes, the Toyota 86 will have the same top speed and acceleration as before. The model will still do 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, while the car’s top speed will be limited to 136 mph.

Fuel consumption for the Toyota 86

Since the top speed is not changing, the fuel economy of the Toyota 86 doesn’t seem to change that much either. This new model will have similar characteristics when it comes to fuel economy of the FR-S. We’re looking at potentially 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined for this new car. It will be good for the segment even if the pricing stays exactly the same.

Dimensions of the new Toyota 86

In terms of dimensions, the Toyota 86 will not have the same name as its predecessor, but will carry over its size. The car will remain 166.7 cm long with a wheelbase of 101.2 cm. The height is 50.6 inches, while the width is 69.9 inches. The passenger volume offers 80 cu ft of space, while the cargo space is 7 cu ft.

Security features

The new Toyota 86 will inherit some standard safety features like all cars in the range. We mean six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability and traction control. There are also some special additions like hill start assist, a rearview camera, and even a limited-slip differential.

We can carry over the crash test rating from the FR-S because the 86 model has not yet been crash tested. The NHTSA gave it a four-star rating for frontal crash protection and a five-star rating for rollover protection. It gets a 5-star rating, and the IIHS also gave it a “Good” overall rating, but only an “Acceptable” rating in the tough small-overlap frontal test.

Potential competing cars

Even with the new name, the Toyota 86 will have the same competitors as before with the old name. The car will be launched in the same segment as before and will have cars like the Honda Civic and Hyundai Veloster.
