Audi A4 Allroad 2025: Premium wagon with off-road capabilities
If a station wagon with extra ground clearance sounds like the description of an SUV, the Audi A4 Allroad proves that’s not true. The A4 Allroad retains its car-like qualities while offering a more rugged look and a little more space between its underside and the ground. This formula isn’t new; the A4 Allroad has several established rugged-class rivals, including the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC100 EVs .
Audi A4 Avant
Its turbocharged engine and standard all-wheel drive provide plenty of power and all-weather capability, while its interior offers generous space for people and cargo, as well as plenty of standard high-tech. You won’t see the Allroad going toe-to-toe with Jeep and Toyota 4Runners in Moab, but this wagon has the same capabilities as the average compact crossover—plus some premium flair.
What’s new ?
The A4 Allroad carries over unchanged through . We recommend the mid-range Premium Plus model. It’s slightly bumped up from the base Premium model and offers additional standard features that luxury buyers will prefer, like Audi’s cool Virtual Cockpit gauge display, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, a wireless smartphone charging pad, LED headlights, power-folding outside mirrors, and a memory seat for the driver. We’d also add the Cold Weather package with its all-weather floor mats, heated rear seats, and heated steering wheel.
Engine, transmission and performance
There’s only one powertrain for the A4 Allroad, but it’s a good one: the beefier 261-hp version of the regular A4’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, now equipped with a 12-volt hybrid system. A seven-speed automatic transmission and the latest version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system are standard. In our experience with older non-hybrid models, we found that the transmission modulates its setting based on driver preference, allowing for quick, precise shifts in hard driving or more relaxed, unobtrusive shifts around town. We’ll have to wait to test the A4 Allroad with its new powertrain. Based on our experience with it so far, though, the A4 Allroad drives like a dream, balancing ride and handling extremely well. Its cornering grip is adequate and on par with most rivals. It feels more like a car than an SUV, which many buyers will appreciate. We certainly do.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA estimates that the A4 Allroad will earn 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. However, we can’t evaluate its real-world mpg until we run one on our 75-mile highway fuel economy route, which is part of our extensive testing program. For more information on the A4 Allroad’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, comfort and cargo
The A4 Allroad has an attractive, no-nonsense interior that we would much prefer had we not seen the work of art that is the V90’s cabin. It may not be pretty, but the A4 Allroad’s cabin is perfectly functional, beautiful, nicely appointed and comfortable. Although the exterior length is significantly shorter than some of its competitors, the Allroad’s rear seat offers almost as much legroom as the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class wagon and V90. As befits a luxury car, the Allroad comes standard with leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, a panoramic sunroof and tri-zone automatic climate control. However, the A4 Allroad lost the carry-on test before we even unpacked our bags. It’s smaller inside and out than rivals like the E-Class wagon and Outback. Even more baffling is that despite its supposed 11-cubic-foot cargo volume advantage, it barely beats the sedan version of the A4 in cargo space with seats; Behind the back seat it only held six pieces of hand luggage, just one more than the A4 sedan.
Infotainment and connectivity
Audi was one of the first automakers to introduce data plans and Wi-Fi to cars, and it hasn’t stopped innovating. The latest crown jewel of Audi’s MMI infotainment system is the optional Virtual Cockpit, a high-resolution, configurable display that sits where the instrument cluster would normally be. It can be arranged to show either a digital version of a traditional cluster layout or a more infotainment-focused display that can show real-time Google Maps overlays of the surrounding area. At the center of the dashboard is a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Safety and driver assistance functions
The wide range of available driver-assist technologies is impressive, but only forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning are standard. For more information on the A4 Allroad’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning
- Available lane departure warning system
- Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
Warranty and maintenance coverage
Almost all cars in this class, including the A4 Allroad, come with a warranty based on a four-year or 50,000-mile warranty and a limited powertrain warranty. Audi stands out by offering one year of free scheduled maintenance, but that plan is surpassed by Volvo’s three years or 36,000 miles of maintenance included.
Price Audi A4 Allroad
The basic costs of the new Audi A4 Allroad start at around €44,700 (Euro).
