BMW X1 2025: Evolution of the compact crossover
The current generation of the BMW X1 entry-level crossover has been around for nearly six years, and although some competitors are significantly younger, it still holds its own quite well in the subcompact luxury car segment.

Nevertheless, the Bavarian company will not hesitate to offer a completely new model, which could already be available as the BMW X1. At this point, we are still waiting to hear anything more precise from the officials, but this scenario sounds more than likely, especially if we take into account the recent redesign of the 1 Series hatchback.
We expect only evolutionary changes for the BMW X1. The test mule was spotted on the road and despite the camouflage, it sports a fairly similar overall shape to its predecessor. Furthermore, we expect the new cabin to be very similar to its hatchback sibling, while the powertrain lineup should include some improvements.
BMW X1 redesign
The upcoming restyling will bring the third generation of this fancy crossover. From what we know so far, most of the changes will be evolutionary, and this also refers to the platform. We are close to an updated version of the UKL2 platform, which means that the BMW X1 will remain an atypical front-wheel drive BMW. Of course, all-wheel drive will also be available, while we can count on some notable improvements with the new model. This refers especially to the ride quality, as we expect the Bavarian manufacturer to offer some variants with a softer and smoother ride.
Design
As mentioned, the test model has been spotted on the road, and although it still wears full camouflage, we can still see some details on it. First of all, the overall shape may look similar, but there are some notable differences. First of all, the new model looks bolder and a bit more rugged. You can notice a more upright rear end, while overhangs appear shorter than before.
When it comes to styling, we expect nothing but an evolutionary approach. This means pretty much the same front end as the new 1 Series, which brought a slightly sharper face with a more prominent grille and headlights. More details will be known once the test mule has removed some of its camouflage.
Inner
Changes inside are quite predictable. We expect the dashboard to be the same as the new hatchback sibling, which brought some novelties compared to the previous generation. The new dashboard looks more modern, while the quality is even higher. You can also count on many new technologies.
What’s also important is that the BMW X1 remains one of the most practical models in the class, although we don’t know the exact dimensions. The cabin remains spacious and can accommodate adults in both rows of seats. We also expect the new model to remain among class rivals in terms of cargo volume.
BMW X1 engines
When it comes to the powertrain, the new BMW X1 is sure to bring some improvements. This particularly refers to the base engine, a familiar 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Just like the 1 Series, it should receive a notable power boost and boast a maximum output of around 260 hp.
We also expect the M-badged version, which should offer a maximum power of more than 300 hp. Both engines will be equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Finally, we expect the recently introduced plug-in hybrid version to continue in the same vein. This would mean a system based on a 1.5-liter turbo inline-three, with a maximum output of around 225 horsepower. Supposedly, this version will also be offered in North America.
BMW X1 release date and price
The BMW X1 will arrive either in late or in the first half of . We don’t expect any significant performance changes compared to the current model, which starts at around €36,000 (Euro). Models like the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3 will of course remain important competitors.
