This year we also saw spy photos of a camouflaged X2 car doing test laps and we have a feeling that BMW is finally nearing the end of its production phase. This is great news as BMW will finally get to expand its X range with this fabulous looking crossover model.

The BMW X2 will complete BMW’s lineup of X-badged SUVs, which will total seven models once the newly announced X7 is completed. The X2 will actually be a much sleeker and coupe-like version of the X1 car, and will have a similar but unique style compared to other models in the range.

The X2 model is said to use the same underpinnings as the second-generation X1 model, meaning it will take the help of the UKL platform also used by the Mini Cooper and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. The powertrain is said to be borrowed from the X1, at least for the US audience.

Release date of the BMW X2

The new BMW X2 has had a long journey. The idea dates back to 2011. The concept version was presented at the Paris Motor Show this year. This also means that the car will go on sale next year, sometime in mid-, and the US release date will follow, so the car will be available in Europe by .

How much does the BMW X2 car cost?

Pricing for the BMW X2 has yet to be determined, but we can confidently say it will be higher than the current Q2 model. The Q2 model will cost €24,900, while the X1 will be offered for a base MSRP of €30,800. This would mean that the X2 should be priced at €27,000 for German customers, or between €29,000 and €31,000 for Europe.

What will the exterior look like?

After seeing the concept for the BMW X2 and the released photos of it, you can easily determine how the new model will look from the outside. The new X2 model will follow the same path as its predecessor models from BMW and aim for a sportier design. It will be a sportier coupe-like version of the X1 model, but it will not have a hunched roofline. The model also excludes the quarter window that the X1 had and significantly shortens the overhangs.

Since it’s based on the X1, it will also inherit the same design language as that car. It also mixes things up by borrowing many styling cues from its bigger brothers, the X3 and X5 respectively. The fascia will be nearly identical to those models, with the same grille and sleek headlights, but with larger air intakes that result in more aggressive styling.

The rear will be slightly different from the X1. It has a differently designed bumper with a shorter windshield. The cluster has the same configuration, so it’s safe to say the taillights will be different. Finally, the turn signals will be placed on top and point to the sides.

Interior design

The pictures or renderings of the interior for the BMW X2 have not been made. This leaves us a little puzzled, but we can also say that the majority of the car will also be based on the new updates for the X1 model. This means that this car will include the same type of dashboard, a “floating” infotainment display and new refined A/C vents.

Some of the standard features should be a seven-speaker audio system, a multifunctional leather-wrapped steering wheel, and cruise control. The seats are cloth-wrapped for the base model, but higher trims get leather upholstery. Other equipment offered includes an 8.8-inch display, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic roof, and more.

Powertrain specifications

The new BMW X2 is expected to feature the same powertrain as its smallest crossover vehicle in the lineup. We expect the car to be offered in both diesel and petrol versions in three- and four-cylinder formats.

The European model should use the 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine that makes 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque and can only be paired with a six-speed automatic and a power FWD version. The second gasoline engine is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet in the sDrive20i and xDrive20i and offers 228 horses and 258 pound-feet in the xDrive25i.

The diesel variant is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder, which makes 144 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Also offered is the 2.0-liter four-pot, which comes in three outputs: 148 horsepower and 243 pound-feet in the base, 187 horses and 295 pound-feet for the mid-range, and 228 horsepower and a whopping 332 pound-feet of twist for the top-rated.

The US audience can hope for a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet and features an eight-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system.

0-62 mph per hour acceleration capability

The Europe-based BMW X2 has already been released with its acceleration specifications. The new car will be able to accelerate to 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds for the X2 xDrive28i and reach a top speed of 130 mph.

Fuel consumption values

There are currently no indications of the BMW X2’s fuel economy. We suspect they will be available once the release date is set and more testing is done, but for now we see this as completely favorable compared to what they have put out there and what rival vehicles are offering.

Safety equipment

The new BMW X2 will carry over safety equipment from its brother cars. It will most likely use a similar setup to that found in the X1 model and will probably take the entire package from there, updated for the latest version. Further confirmation will come once the details for the interior of the vehicle are announced.

Possible dimensions

The dimensions for the BMW X2 are not yet finalized, but there is a strong possibility that this model will reflect the models shown in the Q2. Since the model is based so much on it and is basically at the same level when it comes to developing models, we can say that the length could be close to 165.0 inches, the wheelbase 102.1 inches, the width 79.09 inches and the height 59.37 inches. These are the dimensions of the Q2 model that are likely to be carried over to the X2 car.

Competing cars

The new BMW X2 will not be left alone in the segment. A warm welcome is given to cars such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class models and also the Nissan Juke , all of which already enjoy a good reputation on the European market.
