Flex SUV could get one more run before the company finally kills it off. The cancellation plan was unveiled last year, but the COVID-19 outbreak is delaying not only new arrivals but also the cuts.

For some vehicles, the pandemic is a nightmare, while the Ford Flex sees it as a blessing in disguise, another chance to shine and keep its place in the lineup. But without major changes, it will be difficult to do so.
The delay in the development of new models will not draw attention to the Ford Flex. Designers and engineers will continue to work on upcoming projects and concepts. Thus, buyers will be offered the same old SUV. Slow sales are the main reason why the nameplate is in danger. Knowing Ford, the automaker will probably redesign and rename the SUV in a few years. Still, there are no trustworthy or official sources confirming these theories.
Ford Flex Specs
The Ford Flex will be powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine. There will be two different configurations on the market. The base model comes with 287 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, which is in line with the class average. Still, the SUV will require premium fuel for the best performance and fuel economy of 19 mpg combined. Also, engineers probably won’t replace a six-speed automatic transmission. Well, the old transmission doesn’t make the ride much better, as newer shifters do. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
Another option is a twin-turbo setup. We’ve become accustomed to seeing it in a high-performance version with 450 hp. However, for the Ford Flex, it only produces 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is the same, while AWD is the only drivetrain available. Fuel economy is even higher, so it’s not surprising that the midsize SUV is on the verge of being discontinued.
Diesel engine
For many years, fans have wanted a more efficient model. For this reason, Flex Diesel seemed like a suitable option. Despite this, the company never did that. Well, next season it might finally happen, with a new turbodiesel unit for the truck segment. Before Ford brings it to the more popular full-size class, a 3.0 V6 could be tested on the outgoing Ford Flex. The Blue Oval automaker has nothing to lose. Well, a turbodiesel unit can produce 260 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, making the SUV one of the most capable models for towing. Also, expect an increase in fuel economy. Mileage could reach 25 mpg combined.
The only other drive type that can beat this is hybrid, but changes in the Ford Flex won’t be that significant. Plus, the PHEV is already available on the popular Explorer.
Ford Flex trim levels
Another reason for slow sales could be the lack of options. The base trim is SE, and only two other packages are available for this SUV. Standard equipment includes the SYNC infotainment system and 17-inch wheels. Standard Flex is a seven-seater model. The SEL model upgrades the infotainment to the SYNC3 and heats the front row seats. The wheels are larger and safety is increased. Finally, there is the Limited package at the top of the lineup. In this bundle, you will find 19-inch wheels and leather upholstery. Blind spot monitors make this model safer.
Competitors
The Ford Flex faces many rivals. The midsize segment is growing. Models with seven seats are particularly popular. Toyota Highlander , Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder are just a few interesting models that are selling better. However, the main competition for the Flex has been found within the company. Ford Explorer is probably the hottest model on the market. It is new, comes with a fresh design and a new powertrain. The hybrid version will burst more than 400 ponies and beat the competition in gas mileage.
Ford Flex Prices
The Flex SE gets the discount for the last appearance. Ford will offer it for €30,000. The SEL adds €3,000 and the Limited version costs just under €40,000. There are six different paint jobs to choose from. Agate Black, Oxford White, Magnetic, Stone Gray, Blue and Ingot Silver are the base offering. You can also choose one of three premium colors – Ruby Red, Burgundy Velvet and White Platinum, which increases the price by €600. The good thing about Flex is the contrasting roof color. However, you can replace it with an investment worth €1,600 – Vista sunroof with multiple control panels. The twin-turbo system adds almost €8,000 to the cost of the vehicle. So, if heavily loaded, the Flex could cost almost €50,000.
