Honda Odyssey

There are plenty of nifty technology items provided by the Japanese manufacturer, especially on top trims. Features include an 8-inch color touchscreen audio interface, active noise cancellation, smartphone app integration, a built-in vacuum cleaner to take care of the messes kids inevitably leave behind, and a standard rearview camera.

Another reason you should head to your nearest showroom to purchase this minivan is the fact that the vehicle scores top marks in both insurance and government crash tests.

Perhaps the most striking feature would be the smooth driving experience that the vehicle promises. While we could spend an entire day praising the Honda Odyssey, it is always imperative to explore other options. The Toyota Siena has an agile engine and tons of additional technology and safety features. Another option would be the Nissan Quest, which is known for its appealing and high-quality interior. Other options include the Ford Transit Connect and Dodge Grand Caravan.

The base LX model will come with variable windshield wipers, 17-inch steel wheels, rear privacy glass, keyless entry, a rear spoiler, dual-zone manual air conditioning, an eight-way power driver’s seat, cloth upholstery, a four-way front passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding third-row seat, full power accessories, an 8-inch multi-information display, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, text-to-speech capabilities, a rearview camera, a seven-speaker audio system with Pandora compatibility, a CD player, an auxiliary audio input jack and an iPod/USB interface.

Stepping up to the eight-passenger EX model gets you heated mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, power-sliding side doors, tri-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, power lumbar adjustment for the driver, a removable front center console, a multi-adjustable second-row seat, a conversation mirror and retractable second-row sunshades. The EX also features an additional 7-inch touchscreen with HondaLink smartphone app integration and Honda’s LaneWatch blind-spot camera system (built into the passenger mirror).

EX-L versions add forward collision warning, power liftgate and lane departure warning systems, heated front seats, leather seats (second row front and outboard), a refrigerated storage box, satellite radio and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Moving up to the Touring model gets you fog lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a 115-volt household power outlet, driver memory settings, a fold-down armrest for third-row passengers, and retractable third-row sunshades. Additionally, both the rear-seat entertainment and navigation systems are standard. The Touring Elite model adds a regular blind-spot warning system, xenon headlights, an integrated vacuum cleaner, a 12-speaker premium surround-sound audio system with HD radio, and an upgraded rear-seat entertainment system.

Engine specifications

The new vehicle is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 248 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the FWD through the 6-speed automatic transmission, although an AWD system is planned. The EPA estimates the minivan’s city/highway/combined fuel economy to be better than last year (19/28/22 mpg).

Some speculation also suggests the possibility of a hybrid powertrain, although the details have not been confirmed or denied. During our own performance testing, the 2015 Honda Odyssey sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds. We expect that figure to improve once we get to the Odyssey. When properly equipped, the vehicle can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Safety features to be expected from the vehicle include anti-lock disc brakes, side airbags for the front seats, stability and traction control, active head restraints for the front seats, and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows.
