Hybrid Tonal

Power comes from either a standard 256-hp turbo-four or a more powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain with an estimated range of more than 30 miles on all-electric power. Add to that the raised driving position and standard all-wheel drive that SUV buyers crave, plus the potential of the high-performance Quadrifoglio model, and the Tonale is a compelling entry in the class that also includes the BMW X1 , Mercedes Benz GLA and Volvo XC40 .

What’s new in ?

The Tonale debuted as a concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Alfa has now released official photos and information that give us a much better idea of what the new little Italian has to offer. The company says the Tonale will hit showrooms in Europe from the first quarter of .

Engine, transmission and performance

The Tonale is offered with two different powertrains, but all models come with all-wheel drive. The standard setup combines a nine-speed automatic transmission with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 256 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The optional plug-in hybrid features a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a rear-axle-mounted electric motor that combine to produce 272 hp.

Alfa equips the Tonale Plug-in with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that’s said to be good for over 30 miles on electric power alone. All models ride on fully independent suspension; adaptive dampers are optional. We’ll have to wait until we can get behind the wheel to confirm Alfa’s claims, but the brand promises the driving experience will stay true to its “racing DNA.”

Interior, comfort and cargo

Inside, the circular air vents and driver-focused dashboard layout are clearly borrowed from the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. The instrument panel also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while the three-spoke steering wheel adds a modern twist to the classic design.

Prices for the Tonale

Although Alfa said the Tonale will be available in three trims, it didn’t mention how much each would cost or exactly what options would be available. We predict the base model will cost between €33,000 and €36,500, which is in line with the starting price of other subcompact luxury crossovers.
