Hyundai Kona Electric

It’s a bit like those fancy Allbirds wool shoes that are durable and waterproof, yet still eco-friendly. So it costs more than regular Hyundai Kona models, but is comparable to comparable electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID3.

styling

Kona Electric uses a sophisticated aesthetic with organic geometric body shapes and sporty contours for a modern, environmentally-focused appearance. Its distinctive design is enhanced by the car’s voluminous, futuristic body design, which emphasizes its well-proportioned, dynamic silhouette.

A low and wide stance complements the profile with a long wheelbase and short overhangs that ensure sporty, nimble handling and control, offering excellent driving stability at highway speeds. The sophisticated, aerodynamically tuned wheel arch and rear fascia combine powerfully with futuristic LED lighting to create a high-tech eco-look.

Inner

The unique features of the exterior continue inside with a strong horizontal character line that creates a wide and spacious feel. Despite its compact dimensions and low roofline, the Kona Electric offers excellent interior spaciousness, particularly in front headroom. The sleek and simple interior highlights the modern and efficient exterior design. Kona Electric’s exclusive shift-by-wire drive controls are supported by an upper center console bridge element with an integrated lower open-access storage compartment. The audio/navigation display features advanced infotainment features, and the available floating seamless 8-inch navigation touchscreen includes standard Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ functionality.

Performance

The Kona Electric powertrain uses a highly efficient 150 kW (201 hp) permanent magnet synchronous electric motor powered by a 64 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery. The motor develops 291 lb.-ft. of torque distributed to the front wheels. The powertrain inverter has a power density of 25.4 kVA per liter. The battery system is liquid-cooled and operates at 356 volts. The energy density of the battery pack is 141.3 Wh/kg (greater than the Chevy Bolt), with the total weight of the battery system being under 1,000 lbs.

Security

Hyundai is the only global automaker to manufacture its own steel for vehicle production to enhance Kona Electric’s structural integrity and safety. The lightweight yet strong unibody structure is engineered with Advanced High Strength Steel to ensure the highest levels of safety. Kona Electric also offers a range of advanced safety features including lane departure warning, blind spot collision warning, rear cross traffic collision-avoidance assist, parking distance warning and forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection.

Energy reserve

The Kona Electric uses a standard Level II on-board charging system with a 7.2 kW charging power for fast charging. The Kona Electric has an estimated range of 258 miles to meet the diverse needs of owners. An 80 percent charge can be achieved with a Level III fast charge (0 to 80 percent charge at 100 kW charging power) via an SAE combo charger in 54 minutes, while a 7.2 kW Level II charger takes nine hours and thirty-five minutes. This fast charging feature is standard on the Kona Electric.
