They make the cabin more driver-focused and passengers will also benefit from a number of comfort improvements. However, there is currently not much information on the powertrain options for the US market, as the European one has already confirmed the existence of two petrol options.

Kia is pushing its Sportage model this time so that it can compete in the market, especially against the competition. The model will try to offer more quality while reducing fuel consumption, while also being cost-effective for the buyers. The competition will surely have a tough time with all the given features, but it remains to be seen how this will translate to the customers.

Release date

Currently, news about the Kia Sportage release date is scarce. The manufacturer has not confirmed when the car will hit the market, but we can assume that it should be somewhere in late or at least early .

What is the price of the Kia Sportage?

As mentioned earlier, the price list for this car, the Kia Sportage, has already been decided. The car is available in three trims: LX, EX and SX and with FWD and AWD options. The base LX version is offered for $22,990 in FWD and $24,490 in AWD, the EX costs $25,500 for the FWD versions and $27,000 for the AWD version, and finally, the SX costs $32,500 for FWD and $34,000 for AWD. All prices are offered as base MSRP.

Exterior details

Kia will use an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach for its Kia Sportage model. Kia has been revamping its lineup since 2006 and they have done a much better job in recent years when it comes to style. They redesigned this car by separating the “tiger nose” grille from the headlights. It is also positioned lower and wider so the engine is cooled more. The headlights are moved higher and stretch a bit into the hood line.

The side of the car sees some slightly beefed up wheel arches. The lines and crease look sharper and are positioned at a sharper angle as well. The roof is also different as it slopes down more gradually.

The rear is very different and it has several horizontal liens that make the car look wider. At the top, there is a long rear spoiler and slim taillights inspired by those on the Kia Provo concept model. There is an additional dividing crease that divides the hatch while a metal strip connects the two lights together. All in all, we can say that the Kia Sportage looks much more fashionable this time around.

Within changes

The main improvements are saved for the interior of the Kia Sportage. The dashboard now features plenty of horizontal lines and the interface is a bit more driver-focused. Added to this is an all-new multifunction steering wheel, while the gauges are placed on the sides of the central information display.

The interior will also benefit from new color schemes with a two-tone black, a two-tone dark and light gray, and a two-tone black and canyon beige. The optional sunroof has been extended, reaching up to a total length of 19.3 inches, as it has been extended by 4.09 inches.

Infotainment will also be fixed with a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen for the dashboard. It will also offer connected services and satellite navigation, as well as real-time traffic updates. European customers may also get DAB digital radio. All vehicles come with a 160-watt, six-speaker stereo or an optional 320-watt, eight-speaker system from JBL.

Drivetrain and technical data

For the Kia Sportage model, we will get a range of petrol and diesel offers. Kia is aiming for the ability to give the car more power while making it economical. This may sound controversial and we will see if they manage to fulfill their plans.

The most powerful engine is the turbocharged 1.6-liter T-GDI direct injection. Nicknamed the “Gamma” engine, this unit produces 175 horsepower and has torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm.

There are a few options carried over from the previous model, namely the 1.6-liter GDI with 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque and the 1.7-liter CRDi diesel with 113 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque.

If you want better performance for your Sportage, you can opt for a 2.0-liter R-diesel engine that makes 134 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, or for 181 horsepower and a whopping 295 pound-feet of torque offered in two levels. Kia also includes a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which is used for the first time on its Kia models.

0-62 mph per hour performance

Having so many engines at your disposal means that the Kia Sportage model will offer different power rates. However, no official statistics are available at the moment. The model is expected to offer an acceleration rate of less than 7 seconds needed to reach 0-100 km per hour, while a top speed of 130 mph could work well for the latest car as well, in our opinion.

Has fuel consumption improved?

The plan for the Kia Sportage model was to add more power and improve fuel economy. Some would say that would be a dream come true, but that it is still a dream for any car. The EPA stats have not been released yet, but manufacturers have made great strides to make each of their offerings significantly more fuel efficient than it was. We will see what they do with the US specification and what prices it will have. The current model can give us 20 mpg city, 23 mg highway and 21 mpg combined.

Dimensions for the car

The Kia Sportage will change dimensions this time. This will also benefit the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle, slightly improving the drag coefficient from 0.35 to 0.33. The overall length of the car is larger, the model now measures 176.4 inches in total and has gained an increase of 1.57 inches. The wheelbase is now increased by 1.18 inches and is 105.1 inches in total. The width is 73 inches and the height is 64.4 inches. Both figures remain unchanged.

Safety perspective of the Kia Sportage

Improvements for the Kia Sportage were not only made for the outside and inside of the vehicle. They also decided to make the car much safer. This brings improved visibility for the car as the driver can see much better thanks to the thinner pillars. The body is also much stronger as it is made of 51 percent ultra-high-strength steel.

The model will also include new technologies when it comes to safety. Front and side protection airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as curtain airbags for the first and second rows, are available as standard. Added to this are the ISOFIX child seat anchor points, the vehicle stability management system and other autonomous safety equipment such as ear cross traffic alert, high beam assist, lane departure warning, automatic braking and a speed limit information function.

Competitors

The competition for the Kia Sportage mostly consists of two models. The cars to look out for that have similar features are the Nissan Rogue and the Mazda CX-5 .
