land Rover Defender 80 2025: Price, consumption, picture, technical data.

To complement the newly redesigned Defender midsize SUV, Land Rover is preparing the junior Land Rover Defender 80, a smaller and more affordable entry in its most adventurous SUV line. The Defender 80, however, is unlikely to ride on a shortened version of the larger Defender platform. Instead, it will likely share the underpinnings with the Harrier, a small SUV sold by Jaguar Land Rover ‘s parent company , Tata.

Land Rover Defender 80

Why call it 80? We’re speculating on the name, but it makes sense considering the larger Defender comes in two-door 90 and four-door 110 trims. We expect a starting price of around €30,000 (Euros), which would allow the base model to compete with the upcoming Ford Bronco and current Jeep Wrangler . Upscale SE and HSE trims could take on luxury subcompact SUVs like the Audi Q3 , BMW X1 and Volvo XC40 .

What’s new ?

The Defender 80 will be an all-new model battling in the compact SUV arena when it goes on sale in as a model.
It’s too early to recommend any of the Defender 80’s trim levels. That will have to wait until we know more about standard and optional features. Regardless of trim, we expect the Defender 80 to offer Land Rover-style off-road capability in the form of a robust 4WD or all-wheel drive system as standard, plus plenty of ground clearance and generous approach, breakover and departure angles.

Engine, transmission and performance

We don’t yet know what engines will be found under the hood of the Defender 80. Land Rover’s 246-hp 2.0-liter Ingenium four-cylinder found in the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque would be a good choice; a three-cylinder turbo engine is another possibility, and as the automotive industry continues to electrify, a plug-in hybrid setup could also be offered. A four-wheel or all-wheel drive system will undoubtedly be standard, and it’s possible that a host of other off-road tech features could make the cut, including an air suspension that adjusts ride height and a choice of off-road driving modes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA has not released any information on the Defender 80’s fuel economy ratings and likely won’t do so until closer to the SUV’s on-sale date. With three- or four-cylinder power and a relatively small overall package, the Defender 80 should deliver decent fuel economy despite its expected boxy design. For more information on the Defender 80’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, comfort and cargo

Details about the interior of the Defender 80 have not been revealed, but we expect it to be built in a four-door body style with room for four adults and ample room in the rear for gear and luggage. Considering the Defender 80’s target market, we could see at least one model with a carpet-less interior that allows for easy cleaning after a day of hiking, and stain-resistant upholstery that allows for easy cleaning. Higher-end models will likely offer leather upholstery and features that would be considered luxury items, such as heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and adjustable ambient interior lighting.

Infotainment and connectivity

Land Rover’s new Pivi Pro infotainment system, which debuted on the regular Defender, should also be standard on the smaller Defender 80. Displayed on a 10.0-inch touchscreen, this system is Jaguar-Land Rover’s latest technology and can handle over-the-air software updates. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included in the software; in-dash navigation and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot should be available at least as options.

Safety and driver assistance functions

We expect a variety of driver assistance features to be offered as standard equipment, with more advanced technologies being optional. For more information on the Defender 80’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard
  • Available lane departure warning with lane keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

All other Land Rover models come with a fairly basic standard warranty package and we expect the Defender 80 to follow suit. Key rivals such as the XC40 and Jaguar E-Pace offer more value here in the form of free scheduled servicing plans that extend over three and five years respectively.
