Maserati Grecale 2025: New compact luxury SUV from Italian automaker

Maserati is attempting a comeback, and a compact luxury SUV like the upcoming Maserati Grecale should only help in that mission. This new entry under the mid-size Levante SUV is part of the Italian automaker’s aspirations to launch ten new or heavily redesigned models by . While the Grecale is nowhere near as fantastic as the new MC20 supercar, it will certainly appeal to a wider audience – one that has shown an insatiable appetite for compacts.

We don’t have many details on the new Maserati at the moment, but we suspect it will borrow parts from the similarly sized Alfa Romeo Tonale . This relationship and the brand’s performance heritage mean the Maserati Grecale will challenge the BMW X3 M and Porsche Macan .

What’s new ?

During the MC20 supercar presentation, Maserati teased an upcoming SUV called the Grecale that would be smaller than its Levante SUV. The announcement didn’t include many details, other than that it will be built next to the Stelvio at the Cassino plant in Italy and that pre-production models are expected to roll off the assembly line in early . We even saw a prototype of the new ute driving on the road. We’re also told it will be available with a traditional gas engine, as well as all-electric and hybrid powertrains.

Since Maserati hasn’t revealed any pricing details, we can only guess that the Grecale will cost about the same as the Stelvio and X3, which each start at just under €43,000 (Euros). Judging by other models that bear the brand’s trident logo, we expect the compact ute to offer at least a high-performance Trofeo version. It could even inherit the 505-hp twin-turbo V-6 that powers the incredible Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, but for now, all we can do is hope and dream.

Engine, transmission and performance

The Grecale will be available with a gasoline engine, as well as fully electric and hybrid powertrains. While it’s difficult to speculate on the latter two options, we believe the Maserati could get a version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that powers the base Stelvio. This also suggests it could feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. If we’re lucky, a potential Trofeo version of the Grecale could even feature the Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 as seen in the fire-breathing Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Regardless of what’s under the hood, the smallest Maserati ute will likely try to appease people who enjoy their luxury fare with an extra helping of power.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Maserati has not announced fuel economy ratings for the Maserati Grecale. With the availability of all-electric and hybrid powertrains, it has a chance to compete with alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid. Once we receive official information and have a chance to drive the Grecale variants on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, part of our extensive testing program, we’ll be able to evaluate the lineup’s real-world MPGs. For more information on the Grecale’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, comfort and cargo

Maserati is known for incorporating a lot of luxury and performance into its vehicles, which is said to be the case with the Grecale. We have no idea what the interior design will look like, but we’re confident it will reflect the brand’s affluent aesthetic. That means rich materials and plenty of upscale amenities. Passengers should have enough room to be comfortable, as long as the rear passengers aren’t too tall or are riding in threes. If the cargo space is the equivalent of the Stelvio Pass, the Maserati won’t be among the most spacious crossovers in this class.

Infotainment and connectivity

Every compact luxury crossover offers a touchscreen infotainment system and popular connectivity features. We expect the Grecale to follow this trend by offering standard content like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as desirable options like wireless charging and a premium audio system.

Safety and driver assistance functions

We expect the compact ute to feature a range of standard and optional driver-assist technologies. For more information on the Grecale’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Available blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

Maserati offers a competitive limited warranty and powertrain warranty compared to other luxury brands competing in the space, but unlike BMW and Jaguar , the company does not offer free scheduled maintenance.
