Redesign
As mentioned, this will most likely be the last year of production of the current generation, so no major changes are expected. The same goes for the styling. Although there are several competitors that are significantly younger, this is still one of the best-looking models in the class. Again, we don’t expect any major changes. The Mazda CX-5 (50) will continue with the same cabin, which looks really amazing. All of them are really well packaged and the overall build quality impresses us even after several years after launch. In addition, last year’s refresh brought a new 10.25 infotainment screen, which makes everything look even more impressive.
However, that doesn’t mean the CX-5 is without its faults. Despite its segment-typical wheelbase, it isn’t as spacious as most rivals. This particularly applies to the cargo space, which is below average for the segment. You can expect about 31 cubic feet behind the second row and 61 cubic feet of total cargo space. On the other hand, second-row passenger space seems pretty decent for the segment.
Characteristics
We don’t expect any major changes in that aspect either, so base models should carry on with the recently added 10.25-inch infotainment screen, as well as tech goodies like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD radio. In higher trim levels, you can also count on goodies like dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a sunroof, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch digital instrument display, two rear USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, satellite radio, and more.
Even more impressive are the safety features. All models come standard with extras like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and much more. On top of that, you get goodies like adaptive cornering lights, a head-up display, a surround-view camera, traffic sign recognition, etc.
Engines
Things under the hood will certainly stay the same. The diesel option was recently discontinued, so the Mazda CX-5 (50) will be offered with two petrol engines. The base is a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder that produces around 187 horsepower. It’s not particularly fast, but it gets the job done in most cases. If you need something a little peppier, the optional turbo-four is the perfect choice. It delivers 227 horsepower, but maximum power can be boosted up to 250 horses with premium fuel. Both engines are paired with a well-functioning 6-speed automatic transmission.
When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine delivers around 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The optional turbo-four is good for about 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Those are pretty typical ratings for the class.
Release date and price
We expect to see the Mazda CX-5 (50) sometime at the end of the year. Base models should go around €26,000 (Euro), while some of the main competitors will be models like Subaru Forester , Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V SUV .
