Mazda CX-7 2025: Return of the old model with new features

The Mazda CX-7 will be a new product from the Japanese automaker. Well, it’s not entirely new as the same nameplate was part of the lineup earlier. The company hasn’t wasted too much time and Mazda is about to bring back the CX-7 as an SUV between the CX-5 and CX-9 . This means that the new mid-size two-row SUV is on the horizon. We can compare it with the CX-8 which is only available in Japan. Experts believe that many similarities will be easy to spot.

SUV Mazda CX-7

Here are the hottest rumors surrounding the Mazda CX-7. The SUV’s name hints at its position between two existing models. But the CX-7 could take shades of the previous design and become something between a crossover SUV and a station wagon. Or designers could take a more aggressive approach. That could bring the CX-7 as a coupe-crossover SUV. In addition, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains are possible. Still, we can guess what kind of conventional powerplants this model will use.

Should Mazda CX-7 ?

There are many pros and cons. The company discontinued the model a few years ago due to poor sales. The redesign would cost too much and Mazda decided to stop production. Meanwhile, the CX-5 is enjoying great success, which led to the expansion of the lineup. The latest vehicles to join the team are the CX-30 and CX-50. Also, there is room for a two-row SUV between the CX-5 and the CX-9.

This class is not very popular these days, but many buyers still buy such vehicles. It saves the budget compared to three-row SUVs and offers a big performance boost if compact crossovers are too underpowered for your taste. A big decision is looming for Mazda bosses. But the company could save some money by building the Mazda CX-7 on the same platform as the CX-8 in Japan.

Engine selection

It seems like a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is an easy guess. It’s good for 185 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. The system is recognizable thanks to the SkyActiv system, which is also available on other popular Mazda vehicles. Gas mileage will be over 30 mpg on the highway, making the Mazda CX-7 one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the market.

It’s hard to believe that the return of the vehicle will bring back an old unit. A 2.3-liter mill produced 160 hp and 160 lb-ft. Still, many improvements are needed before this engine reappears in the European markets. Instead, engineers could go with a turbo-four configuration and a 250-hp setup. This one requires premium fuel to produce maximum power. A 2.2-liter oil burner is another possibility. We won’t see it in North America, though.

Hybrid model and new look

The two hottest topics surrounding the crossover SUV are what the Mazda CX-7 will look like and whether it will get a hybrid powertrain. The redesign will be different from its predecessor. It will be inspired by the CX-8, the SUV produced exclusively for the Japanese market. Coupe chassis will definitely attract attention. But there are not too many buyers of such vehicles these days. However, the market for coupe SUVs is growing. Infiniti is the latest company to add such a model to the lineup ( QX55 ).

A hybrid based on a SkyActiv engine could skyrocket the Mazda CX-7’s gas mileage. Some experts are looking to see what the Japanese automaker is doing. Even the base mills are pretty efficient. They are sure that hybrid boost can return the CX-5 more than 40 mpg. The CX-7 would be a bit thirstier.

Price Mazda CX-7

The particular Mazda CX-7 redesign is definitely just a rumor, and we are still waiting to hear something from the authorities on this issue. Some options indicate that we could still be dealing with it in the coming year. As for the price, some difficult estimates are likely to be close to €25500 (Euro).
