This cost-effective alternative to the Kia Soul EV and Peugeot e-2008 comes with a new look, an improved infotainment system and a new model with a longer range.

design

Although the basic silhouette and design features of the existing MG ZS EV have been retained, this updated model looks fresher.

Gone is the faux grille in favor of a one-piece front bumper, along with sharper LED headlights. The rear bumper also gets some tweaks, while a new set of alloy wheels rounds out the visual changes.

Batteries and motors

The big news for the new MG ZS EV is a new ‘Long Range’ version that will be your only option at launch. Inside is a 72kWh battery that should offer a range of 273 miles between charges – a pretty drastic increase from 163 miles in the outgoing car.

This also supports 76kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from empty to 80% in 42 minutes. Next year, a 51kWh, 198-mile version of the ZS EV will also join the fray.

No word on power for this upgraded model, but expect it to continue to be offered with just a single electric motor. It should, however, get at least a slight boost over the current car’s 141 horsepower.

Exterior & interior changes

The MG ZS EV has noticeable design changes to further differentiate itself from its donor model and appear unique. Designers have adopted the tried and tested second-generation EV formula, where the conversion model gets a large one-piece mask covering the grille and other areas of the front. The new ZS EV is instantly recognizable as an EV, which was not the case with the old model. However, we wouldn’t say it looks more appealing.

The MG ZS EV design features a new all-electric front end with an embossed grille that results in improved aerodynamics. The charging port is located to the right of the MG logo, not behind it like the MG ZS EV. A four-level LED indicator inside the charging port shows the electric vehicle’s charge level.

The MG ZS EV was one of the last remaining electric cars on the market that did not have LED headlights. The new model features LED headlights, and these new headlights have a sharper design. New bumpers, new wheels and tweaked taillights are also among the visual changes on the exterior.

Inside, the MG ZS EV also features some significant revisions. There’s a fully digital instrument cluster instead of an analogue unit, a floating touchscreen infotainment system instead of an integrated one, and a slimmer and more elegant climate control panel. MG has missed volume and temperature controls in the new model, which would be a thumbs down for old-school drivers. However, the new centre console tidies up the interior slightly.

The new infotainment system features a new user interface that is meant to provide an improved user experience and a larger 10.1-inch display that is also more advanced. Wireless smartphone charging has now made it to the ZS EV as well. There is no wireless Apple CarPlay or wireless Android Auto as is the case with the petrol variant.

Price and release date

The new MG ZS EV will arrive in dealerships in late or early , with pricing announced shortly before then.

Expect it to rise from €30,500 for an existing car (including a government subsidy for a plug-in car), albeit with a larger battery and improved technology. Probably something closer to €35,000.
