New Volvo XC70 2025: New midsize SUV from Swedish automaker

Currently, Volvo’s SUV range offers three models. The mid-size three-row XC90 is one of the most luxurious vehicles in its segment. In the compact segment, we have the XC60 , while the XC40 is a subcompact crossover. The smallest vehicle is the most recent, launched in 2017.

Volvo XC70

Now the Swedish company is planning to expand to other classes. The strongest rumors point to a new Volvo XC70 Hybrid. According to the nomenclature, this should take the position between the compact and mid-size model. A five-seater will offer better handling and better fuel consumption than the XC90. Compared to the XC60, there will be more power and additional safety.

The XC70 used to be a variant of the V70 executive car. For the first time, fans met the XC70 in 1997. Back then, it was also called the V70 Cross Country. Compared to the base car, the special edition had more ground clearance and was only available with all-wheel drive. There were other cosmetic differences as well, but these two set the direction of development for the new crossover. However, in 2016, the company discontinued the V70. Now part of the product range is being revived with the comeback of the New Volvo XC70 Hybrid.

Hybrid is used between XC60 and XC90

Volvo will definitely need more SUVs. The premium automaker is very popular. It is one of the leaders in the mid-size class. But they need depth. That’s what the new Volvo XC70 Hybrid will offer, probably as a mid-size model with five seats. It all depends on its size. Currently, the largest SUV is 195 inches long with a 117.5 inch wheelbase. It’s 10 and 5 inches longer than the XC60. The new SUV is expected to be somewhere in between.

If we compare it with the compact crossover, the XC70 will probably use more powerful engines. The disadvantage is higher consumption. On the other hand, the larger vehicle is safer, but also more expensive. Advantages over XC60 become disadvantages over XC90. Better handling, fuel economy and price are advantages when you go for the new Volvo XC70 Hybrid. The larger SUV established itself as one of the most advanced vehicles in its class. The new one will hardly be able to keep up with the offer of five different drive setups, including a plug-in hybrid.

Hybrid drives

Volvo has an interesting strategy in grading its engine configurations. The basis for all of them is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant. But you’ll choose, T4, T5, T6… As you can imagine, the higher the number next to T, the more power the engine produces. XC60 and XC90 use the same powertrains. Therefore, the Volvo XC70 will probably use all of them too.

The base setup is T5. It combines a four-pot unit with a turbocharger and an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. Optionally, you can choose all-wheel drive. The total output of this system is 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The XC70 returns around 25 mpg combined with FWD and 23 mpg if you opt for AWD. A turbocharged 2.0 engine is the T6 configuration. With this boost, the powertrain is capable of blasting 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In both of the XC70’s siblings, the engine only sends power to all wheels. Higher horsepower results in higher fuel consumption, and gas mileage drops to 22 mpg. Start-stop system helps you save some fuel. However, drivers fret about the rough restarts.

Plug-in hybrid

Last but not least interesting setup is a plug-in hybrid. Again the 2.0L four-cylinder is there, this time supercharged/turbocharged and paired with an electric motor. The system distributes power exclusively to all wheels, and an 8-speed transmission is a router. The popular T8 configuration is good for 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The advantage of this system is that it can run on electric power alone. However, the range is only 20 miles. Volvo is developing the new generation of charging that will reduce the current 2.5 hours for a full charge to 90 minutes or less. The home outlets take 4 hours.

When will the hybrid be available?

The new SUV in the Volvo lineup is not coming anytime soon. We can see it as a concept next year before the company starts production. Currently, the carmaker is working on a few other platforms. Five electric cars will be launched in the next two years. We have to add the Volvo XC70 to this list, with concept XC being one of the future vehicles. Well, the company said they want to develop small models. The XC70 misses that one, but there is definitely a need for a fresh SUV.

Price

As for everything else, the New Volvo XC70 Hybrid will cost less than the XC90 and more than a smaller crossover. We can expect it somewhere around $45,000. With the more powerful T6, the price will increase to €50,000-55,000. The top-of-the-line T8 AWD plug-in hybrid is expected to cost around €65,000.
