Chassis BMW iX3 : innovative fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.
The drive system of the new BMW iX3 offers excellent performance and zero emissions. It is the first model to be equipped with the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. It includes an electric motor developed by the BMW Group, power electronics, advanced charging technology and a high-voltage battery. This highly integrated electric drive system can significantly reduce the space required to accommodate work items. As well as the weight of the components. This has enabled the power density to be increased by around 30 percent compared to the BMW eDrive technology previously used in electrified models.
The electric motor in the new BMW iX3 works on the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor and is therefore very different from other solutions on the market. The rotor is not excited in the usual way, but by the power supply. This design makes it possible to completely dispense with the use of rare earth metals, which are required for magnetic components in the manufacture of the rotor. The latest version of the electric motor also offers an exceptional efficiency of up to 93% compared to today’s combustion engines.
The drive system reaches 17,000 rpm and delivers a maximum power of 210 kW / 286 hp. in the initial phase of movement and keeps it moving in a wide range. The engine generates an extremely high peak torque that can be delivered immediately from the start. The engine power is transmitted to a single-stage gearbox in the same housing and from there to the rear wheels. At the same time, the advanced stability control technology helps to maintain unyielding dynamics even in adverse road and weather conditions. The new BMW iX3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.
The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 is based on the latest high-nickel technology, which is familiar from other BMW products. The lithium-ion battery consists of 188 individually controllable prismatic battery cells, each in an aluminum housing, which are grouped into 10 modules. The battery is located deep in the vehicle floor. The new generation battery has a total energy content of 80 kWh. Superior battery energy density, excellent electric motor efficiency, adaptive energy recovery while driving, lightweight construction and reduced body resistance ensure an impressive range in everyday life and on long journeys. This sets the BMW iX3 apart from other vehicles in this segment, whose range is increased by the use of increasingly powerful high-voltage batteries. This has a negative impact on the weight of the vehicle and thus on its overall efficiency.
