New BMW Z4 2025: price, interior, engine, picture.
Confident handling and a powerful turbo engine are expected from a BMW sports car, and that’s exactly what the New BMW Z4 Cabriolet delivers. But part of its appeal also lies in its upscale cabin, which is comfortable enough to serve as a daily driver. A peppy turbo four-cylinder is offered as the base engine, while a twin-turbo inline six-cylinder can be found in the racier M40i model.
Convertible BMW Z4
All Z4s have rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission that’s well-tuned for both sporty driving and highway cruising. Handling isn’t as sharp as the Porsche Boxster , but it’s close enough and still a lot of fun on a twisty road. The Z4 is only offered as a soft-top convertible, but if you prefer a hardtop coupe, take a look at the mechanically similar Toyota Supra , which was developed in conjunction with the BMW .
What’s new ?
The Z4 is similar to last year, but ambient lighting is no longer standard and wireless smartphone charging is no longer an option. The Driver Assistance package has been removed from the Convenience and Premium packages and is now a standalone option package.
At its base price, the BMW Z4 Drive30i is an undeniable value. It costs significantly less than its main competitor, the Porsche Boxster, and offers more than enough power for most buyers. You can also dress it up with the M Sport kit, which adds an M Sport suspension for better handling and upgrades its appearance inside and out with an aerodynamic body kit and an M Sport steering wheel. Larger 19-inch wheels and tires are also available, and BMW offers the Driving Dynamics package, which adds larger M Sport brakes and its M Sport differential for extra traction. Your new Z4 still won’t accelerate like the much more powerful M40i, but it will be more than quick enough to satisfy.
Engine, transmission and performance
Every Z4 comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission with sport mode as well as manual mode. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also standard. That’s right: For the first time, the BMW Z4 doesn’t come with a classic manual transmission with a clutch pedal. You won’t miss it. The eight-speed is one of the best automatics, with sharp responses, quick shifts and smooth operation. The sDrive30i is powered by the brand’s excellent 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes plenty of torque and 255 horsepower. In our testing, this model accelerated to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds. That’s quick, but a bit slower than a Porsche Boxster, which is still available with a manual transmission. For more grunt, the M40i model gets a 382-horsepower twin-turbo inline-six. It’s incredibly smooth and refined, transforming the Z4 into a super-fast sports car with a zero-to-100 km/h time of just 3.8 seconds. That’s faster than the 350 hp Porsche Boxster S.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
With its exceptional performance, you may be surprised to learn that the Z4 is one of the most fuel-efficient sports cars in its class. The Z4 sDrive30i’s fuel economy is rated by the EPA at 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. With its much higher horsepower, the Z4 M40i’s fuel economy is just a single mpg lower, getting 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. In our testing, both models recorded 20 mpg in mixed driving. Unfortunately, both engines require more expensive premium gasoline, and the Z4 has a small gas tank, so its fuel range isn’t great. Expect to drive about 300 miles of highway between each fill-up. For more information on the Z4’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, comfort and cargo
Like all current BMWs, the Z4 has a very high-quality interior. In fact, it may have the best interior in this class. It features luxurious materials, exceptional panel fit and excellent control placement. Its seats are comfortable with large bolsters that keep you in place as you enjoy the Z4’s dynamics. There’s also more room inside than you might expect, even for those taller than 6’1″. Thick and insulated, the fabric roof seals tightly. With the top down, the BMW’s interior is impressively quiet, with so little wind and road noise it almost feels like a grand touring coupe. At the touch of a button, it folds down in a matter of seconds. A wind deflector is standard to keep wind gusts to a minimum even at high speeds with the top down. Storage space inside is also quite generous. There are several storage compartments around the Z4’s cabin, including one in the center console and a felt-lined storage compartment to the left of the steering wheel. There’s also a mesh storage compartment behind the seats and two large cupholders up front. At 10 cubic feet, the Z4’s trunk isn’t huge, but it swallows luggage for two people for a quick weekend getaway.
Infotainment and connectivity
A huge 10.3-inch touchscreen is standard, as are navigation and free Apple CarPlay integration; Android Auto functionality is not available. The latest version of BMW’s iDrive system is easy to use and offers sharp graphics. The system is also intuitive to control with a rotary knob and buttons on the Z4’s console or with voice commands. A USB port and Bluetooth audio streaming are also standard, though you’ll have to pay extra for SiriusXM satellite radio.
Safety and driver assistance functions
Forward collision warning and daytime pedestrian detection with city braking are standard, as is BMW’s lane departure warning. Additional driver assistance technologies are available as options for both Z4 models. This list of available systems includes active cruise control, active blind spot detection, rear collision mitigation and rear cross traffic alert. For more information on the Z4’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard collision detection with pedestrian detection
- Available active cruise control
- Available active blind spot detection
Warranty and maintenance coverage
BMW’s warranty is average for the segment; however, what stands out is its free scheduled maintenance. Such programs are not offered on its competitors, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class and Porsche 718 Boxster .
How much does the BMW Z4 cost?
BMW is proud of the Z4. The base price starts at around €43000 (Euro); add another €1200 (Euro) for the M40i.
Spend the extra, we say. Nobody is rationalizing a Z4, so you might as well have a little fun with its firmer suspension and more powerful engine.
Where will the BMW Z4 be manufactured in ?
In Austria.
