SUV Escape

The crossover will remain unchanged for the following season, and only changes that we could see on it will be based on the first impressions. Buyers will soon have first complaints and designers will have tasks to fix problems.

The highlight of the fourth generation Escape crossover is its styling. Ford is leaving the car segment in Europe. But the Ford Escape will occupy this vacant space. Yes, this is still a crossover, but the shape is definitely car-like. Another important upgrade is a hybrid powertrain with a plug-in option. According to reports, this version will return an almost unrealistic 39 mpg.

Changes

Compared to the next season’s model, which will start selling in the last quarter of this year, the Ford Escape remains unchanged. This means that all the updates that the fourth generation brings remain up to date. The styling is much more fluid and it seems like Ford is trying to fill empty spaces in the car segment.

The crossover will be lower than before, meaning off-roading is not its primary purpose. The vehicle may look smaller, but it actually offers more space inside. Behind the rear seats, the new Escape will have 38 cubic feet of storage space. That’s 4 cu.ft. more than before. Some say the third row could be fitted there.

Inner

Standard equipment on the Ford Escape remains the same as the model, with only the base trim lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch display is the center of a dashboard. The cluster screen is 12 inches wide. USB upgrade ports on higher trim levels to the C-level. Top-of-the-line models come with a premium B&O audio system. Safety is also improved, with Co-Pilot360 coming standard with blind spot and lane departure warnings, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control.

Gasoline engines

The new Ford Escape will use two gasoline powertrains from the previous generation. The base crossover will use a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three unit capable of producing 180 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. Ford has boosted fuel economy, and the new Escape will return 28 mpg combined. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to either the front wheels or all wheels this time around. Previously, Escape was only the FWD model.

A more powerful engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant. Also turbocharged, it makes 5 more horsepower than before for a total of 250 hp. Torque output remains at 275 lb-ft. The same transmission is a power mill for this engine. Fuel economy is the cost of the extra power. Gas mileage drops to 24 mpg FWD and 23 mpg AWD. This engine offers the maximum towing capacity at 3,500 pounds.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid

The biggest addition to the new generation is a hybrid model. According to rumors, the new Ford Escape Hybrid will return up to 39 mpg. The company uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that was previously used as a naturally aspirated engine for the standard model. Back then, it was capable of producing 170 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, while returning 29 mpg on the highway. Previously, there were two hybrid editions for this crossover. In 2004, it was rated at 25 mpg combined, and in 2012 – 32 mpg. With an average of 35 mpg, this is a significant gain. For example, the Nissan Rogue Hybrid consumes the same amount of fuel on the highway. On the other hand, Toyota Rav4 returns 40 mpg.

The plug-in hybrid will be available as the first update and is expected to be available as the Ford Escape PHEV. The company hasn’t released any details about this version, but we found that the range for driving on electric power is just 30 miles.

Three-row version

A three-row compact crossover definitely attracts a lot of attention. Some larger models do not offer such a configuration. However, the latest speculations say that Ford is considering adding the third row for its fresh model. With the extra space we talked about, it might be possible, but the third row would be very tight. On the other hand, the extended cabin would provide more space. However, this will require a lot of changes and modifications in other areas.
