New Hyundai Ioniq 5 2025: Advanced electric crossover with futuristic design and innovative technologies

The New Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an all-electric compact crossover with advanced technology, futuristic design, and a versatile interior. Intended as a Hyundai sub-brand, the Ioniq moniker also applies to a flood of upcoming EV models, but the New Hyundai Ioniq 5 has debuted first.

New Hyundai Ioniq 5

It features an 800-volt architecture that allows for impressive charging speeds, and we estimate it will have a range of between 258 and 290 miles. Available with rear- or all-wheel drive, the EV ute produces between 225 and 320 horsepower. Its eco-friendly interior features a technology-focused dashboard, adjustable front seats with footrests, and a generous passenger compartment.

Engine, transmission and performance

The Ioniq 5 features an all-electric powertrain available in two powers. The rear-wheel-drive configuration produces 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which Hyundai says will propel the 5 from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The all-wheel-drive version is much more powerful, with 320 horses and a respectable 446 pound-feet, and faster too. It’s said to catapult to 60 mph in 5.2 ticks. The 5 rides on Hyundai and Kia’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which in turn will underpin the companies’ lineup of new EV models.

Range, charging and battery life

With 800 volts of operating voltage, the Ioniq 5 features the same advanced electrical architecture as the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan. However, by the looks of things, the battery pack has a lower usable battery capacity. The Ioniq’s pack delivers 77.4 kWh and can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 18 minutes, or add 110 miles in about five minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger. Hyundai is targeting a range of 300 miles for the rear-wheel drive model and 269 miles with all-wheel drive. We estimate that the final versions will offer between 258 and 290 miles of range.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Since Hyundai hasn’t released any information on the Ioniq 5’s efficiency, we don’t have anything to report here. Once those details are known and we have a chance to test one, we’ll evaluate how efficient the Ioniq 5 is in the real world. For more information on the Ioniq 5’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, comfort and cargo

While not as artistic as the cabin teased by the Hyundai 45 concept, the Ioniq 5’s interior offers a tech-savvy space with a digitized dashboard and a heavy dose of eco-friendly materials. An augmented reality head-up display that can project navigation instructions onto the windshield is just one imaginative feature.

The compact crossover also benefits from its all-electric package, with a completely flat floor for maximum passenger and cargo space. The front seats also recline and feature footrests, allowing people to relax while the Ioniq charges. With a wheelbase longer than the three-row Hyundai Palisade, the 5 Series offers ample room for front and rear seat passengers. Its large center console offers plenty of storage and slides between the front seats on premium Limited trim.

Infotainment and connectivity

Hyundai says its Ioniq sub-brand emphasizes connected living, and the Ioniq 5 comes with a host of innovative infotainment and connectivity features. A 12.0-inch touchscreen shares a dashboard control panel with a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, but the former acts as the hub for all entertainment. This includes smartphone-integrated apps such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as advanced voice recognition technology.

Safety and driver assistance functions

Along with a suite of driver-assist technologies, the Ioniq 5 will offer a Level 2 autonomous driving mode called Highway Driver Assist 2, which is similar to GM’s Super Cruise in that it can cruise on the highway and change lanes with little to no driver intervention. More information on the Ioniq 5’s crash test results can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features should likely include:

  • Available forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Available lane departure warning and lane keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

Hyundai offers one of the best warranty plans in the industry. Likewise, it comes with an impressive amount of free scheduled maintenance.

  • The limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • The powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • Free maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles
