The eighth generation Hyundai Sonata (codename: Hyundai DN8) will not receive a mid-life redesign. Sales of the model are not up to scratch, at least in the homeland, and so all resources are being channeled into the development of the ninth Hyundai Sonata to give it a fresh start, they say in South Korea.
New Hyundai Sonata
In recent years, the Hyundai Azera (Hyundai Grandeur) has overshadowed the Hyundai Sonata in the Korean market. This is partly because it has evolved into a more appealing product and partly because the Sonata’s odd design has pushed away consumer interest. Sure, the Grandeur has also adopted a quirky new look, but its formula is a hit. It has evolved into a luxurious and sophisticated sedan with a bold design. The outlandish Sonata, on the other hand, looks unattractive and downright comical to many.
Same platform but new design
The ninth-generation Hyundai Sonata (codename: Hyundai DN9) will ride on the same platform that underpins the current model. Publicly referred to as the “third-generation vehicle platform” and internally as the “N3 platform,” it allows for partial electrification with mild-hybrid, full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies. The Sonata DN9’s powertrain options could be the same as the current model (petrol, petrol-electric hybrid and LPG).
With the ninth generation of the Sonata, Hyundai will likely simplify its design, make it more generally acceptable and improve its equipment. The report says that it is very likely that the company will add an augmented reality head-up display, sequential turn signals and the Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) to its feature list.
US launch
Europe will likely be among the first markets worldwide to receive the next-generation Hyundai Sonata in . It will be the ICE model alternative to the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 midsize sedan in the company’s global lineup. We will update this page as new information emerges.
