Few cars, including other sports cars we love, offer the same purity of mission as the Porsche 718 Cayman. Its mid-engine layout and expertly tuned chassis give it a joyful ride that’s truly addictive. Buyers can choose between a four- or six-cylinder boxer engine, the latter singing a siren song that encourages aggressive driving.

The Cayman commands a price premium over rivals like the Chevrolet Corvette and Toyota Supra , but its focused personality and Porsche brand image are enough to justify the increased cost. Fans of open-air driving will find the 718 Boxster a similar experience, but we’ll review that model separately.
What’s new ?
The Cayman sees few changes , but the sport coupe now comes in two new colors – Shark Blue and Frozenberry Metallic. A handful of new customization features are also available, including exterior-color key fobs and various leather accessories from key cases and floor mats to owner’s manual covers.
We’d go for the GTS 4.0 model to unlock the sweeter flat-six engine. We’d also keep the standard manual transmission because it’s more fun than the auto . Plus, every GTS comes with desirable performance equipment, including the adjustable and nicely bolstered Sport Plus seats, a whirr exhaust system, adaptive sport suspension, and black 20-inch wheels. It also features the Sport Chrono package, which includes a limited-slip differential, brake-based torque vectoring, and the obligatory clock on top of the dashboard.
Engine, transmission and performance
Porsche offers a range of potent engines for the Cayman. The entry-level version is a 300-hp 2.0-liter flat-four turbo. The S variant is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine that produces 350 horses. While the four-cylinders provide quick acceleration, we take issue with the coarse noises they produce. Thankfully, the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine fixes the Cayman’s aural issues. In addition to the intoxicating noises, the six-cylinder produces 394 ponies in the GTS 4.0 and 414 in the mighty GT4 RS. Regardless of which engine you choose, every Cayman comes standard with a slick six-speed manual transmission—perhaps the best on the market.
If you don’t like that, you can get a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The Cayman’s idiosyncratic chassis and telepathic steering exceed perfection. Credit the Cayman’s mid-engine layout and sticky summer tires, which work together to give the sports coupe stunning balance and stability on twisty two-lane roads. This car is a sublime blend of exhilarating handling and relatively relaxed ride.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA estimates the base Cayman will get up to 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The more powerful S model is rated at 19 mpg city and 25 highway with the automatic, and a manual-equipped GT4 RS is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway. We tested the base car and a Cayman S on our 200-mile highway route, and both delivered a thrifty 32 mpg in real-world driving. Interior, comfort and cargo
Easy-to-understand gauges, comfortable seats and well-placed controls give the Cayman’s cabin a tailored feel, akin to a superhero suit. However, an abundance of hard buttons and a number of cheap plastics mean the interior doesn’t stand out in this class. Thankfully, Porsche covers almost every surface in leather – at an extra cost, of course. A compact front trunk complements the Cayman’s rear cargo area, giving the small sports car cargo space that rivals the best of its competition. We fit two carry-on suitcases in the trunk and two in the boot. However, a steep rear hatch angle means owners must use soft duffel bags to make the most of the available space.
Infotainment and connectivity
The Cayman’s standard touchscreen infotainment system is straightforward and generally offers quick response times to user inputs. While Porsche spoils its customers by charging extra for some features like built-in navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, every model now has Apple CarPlay compatibility. However, Android Auto is not available. The audio system can be upgraded to either a Bose stereo or a high-end Burmester unit with 12 speakers and a total output of 821 watts.
Safety and driver assistance functions
The Cayman is available with a handful of driver-assist technologies and comes standard with front and rear parking sensors.
