The Porsche Taycan GTS EV sedan isn’t the perfect electric vehicle, but its combination of driving verve and performance endurance makes it the most compelling. With striking looks and a highly customizable, high-tech interior, Porsche’s electrified four-door lives up to its premium price. The Taycan also makes its pilot feel remarkably good about driving a Porsche, thanks to its lively steering, stoic composure and refined handling.
Sports car Taycan EV
Stepping on the accelerator is like firing a rocket, except it can be repeated. While its brakes are great at compensating for that speed, they lack the regenerative properties of traditional electric vehicles and the pedal feels passive. There will always be comparisons with the Tesla Model S, especially with the Porsche’s comparatively short range, but the Taycan EV is undoubtedly the more exciting alternative.
What’s new ?
For , Porsche is making some tweaks to the Taycan family. The lineup is joined by a new 590-hp GTS model that features trim-specific details inside and out and takes on the performance equipment from the range-topping Taycan Turbo S. The GTS also features unique chassis tuning and powertrain calibration for a distinctive driving personality. The infotainment system adds improved voice commands, an improved operating system, and Android Auto finally joins Apple CarPlay.
The Taycan can now also be parked remotely using a smartphone, so no one actually has to sit behind the wheel. The color palette is also being expanded through Porsche’s “Paint to Sample” program, which allows customers to select personal colors, including from classic models from the ’90s. The Taycan ’22 also benefits from better thermal management and charging functions, which Porsche says are aimed at shortening charging times.
While the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S offer performance comparable to supercars, we recommend the less expensive all-wheel-drive Taycan 4S. The 4S comes with a 522-horsepower powertrain, 19-inch wheels, an adaptive air suspension, partial leather upholstery, and keyless entry. To keep costs in check, we’d skip all of Porsche’s many personalization options, but we would upgrade to the Performance Battery Plus, which increases the size of the package and boosts the combined horsepower to 562.
The performance package is also a must, as it makes the Taycan even more entertaining: the rear-axle steering and torque vectoring improve agility, the Sport Plus driving mode optimizes performance, and the active stabilizers support stability.
Engine, transmission and performance
Most Taycan models have two electric motors, one driving the front wheels and the other the rear wheels. They produce separate outputs that vary depending on the trim level. The 4S produces 522 hp with the smaller battery and 562 hp with the larger one. The latter is standard on the top models, the 670 hp Turbo and the 750 hp Turbo S.
The base model produces between 402 and 469 hp, depending on battery size, but only with rear-wheel drive. All Taycan models also feature an innovative two-speed transmission that provides thrilling gear shifting under hard acceleration. We drove the Taycan 4S and were impressed by its quick acceleration (100 km per hour in 3.4 seconds) as well as its point-and-shoot handling. We wish the brake pedal was more responsive, however, especially since Porsche has decided to forego one-pedal driving.
Those with a serious need for speed will be blown away by the Turbo S’s rocket launches. The version we tested hit 60 mph in just 2.4 ticks and completed the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at 130 mph. A Model S Performance with Cheetah mode matched that blast to 60 mph. That blistering acceleration, low driving position and precise steering make the Porsche a standout among electric vehicles. And comfortable it is, too. Even rolling on 21-inch wheels with narrow sidewalls, another Taycan Turbo S we drove never felt stiff or harsh.
Range, charging and battery life
The Taycan’s range is unremarkable compared to that of the Tesla Model S, which can reach 400 miles on a charge. The Porsche’s figures range from 199 to 227 miles, depending on battery size and electric motors. Each model features an 800-volt architecture that allows for peak charging power of 270 kilowatts. Models with the larger battery—Porsche calls this pack 93.4 kWh, but only 83.7 kWh is usable—can charge from 5 to 80 percent in 23 minutes. However, 800-volt DC fast chargers are rare and peak charging rates are not very meaningful, as we examined in a comparison test. Charging on a 50 kW DC fast charger takes 93 minutes, according to Porsche. While 270 kW and 50 kW fast charging capability is standard, 150 kW charging is optional. Interior, comfort and cargo
Inside the sleek-looking Taycan is a technology-laden environment. The design is ostensibly simple and reminiscent of what we’ve seen in other Porsche models. The interior can be finished in a range of rich materials and different color schemes, as expected. There’s a long list of luxury options, including four-zone automatic climate control, massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.
The Taycan comes with 2+2 seating as standard, but there is the option to add a third seat in the rear if desired. We found the electrified Porsche’s rear adjustments and storage space a little lacking, and we didn’t enjoy having to maneuver into the low front seat. The view from behind the wheel is excellent, however.
Infotainment and connectivity
The Taycan isn’t short on screens, but it is short on physical buttons and knobs. In addition to a curved 16.8-inch display for the gauges, there are two centrally located touchscreens that control the infotainment system. The top one is integrated into the dashboard and measures 10.9 inches. It provides access to key functions. The 8.4-inch touchscreen below allows users to adjust climate settings, check battery status, enter navigation details, interact with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features, and open and close the trunks and charging ports. There’s another 10.9-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, and there’s an optional 5.9-inch touchscreen in the back seat that controls the rear HVAC and seat heating.
