The test vehicle appeared to hide a sharper design in the same style as the Megane eVision Electric . Because it looks less bloated than the model it will replace, some might think the Austral is smaller, but in reality it is about the same length as the Kadjar.
review
Back to our story, the Renault Austral is close to its official unveiling as Renault has kicked off its marketing campaign with a teaser. A photo shared by Instagram user mariushanin_automotive (via cochespias) had shown a prototype of the upcoming Renault compact SUV being tested on a public road for the first time in February . Many new images showing other angles of the exterior and showing the design more clearly have since surfaced online.
The fascia of the Renault Austral is reminiscent of the Euro-spec Skoda Kamiq, as it likely features similar split headlights, but there’s a good chance that it only appears that way because of the deliberate cutouts of the camouflage. The headlight cluster appears to be inspired by the Renault Megane eVision. The new front bumper features vertical air intakes.
Compared to the Kadjar, the Austral’s bonnet is flatter and its grille is larger and more upright. At the rear, the spy images show a steeper windshield. The teaser (featured image) suggests that the taillights will extend inward to the new diamond logo. Overall, the Renault Austral looks more like a crossover and less like an SUV.
The Renault Austral looks very different from the Kadjar all around. We can see it with a higher bonnet, flat like a real SUV and an upright grille, wider, with vertical slats. The headlights are slimmer and more angular, and seem to be split in two. Both the bonnet and the headlights show references to the Renault Megane E-Tech. The Kadjar successor will carry the new “Nouvel’R” logo that debuted on the Megane EV.
On the sides, the mirrors are rounder and probably larger than those of the Kadjar, which debuted in February 2015 as the French brand’s first compact (C-segment) crossover. At the rear, the Renault Austral gets new taillights and a new tailgate. The license plate is located on the tailgate instead of on the bumper.
Inner
Expect a touch of luxury in the interior with minimalist design and significantly higher levels of digitalisation to appeal more to younger customers. The Austral will be more digital than the Kadjar and will draw inspiration from the Renault Trezor, Renault Symbioz and Renault Morphoz concepts.
Spy shots, which you can check out at L’Automobile, have confirmed that the Renault Austral will embody the brand’s new interior design theme exactly as speculated. After the Renault Megane E-Tech, it will be the brand’s second production model to feature a (possibly 12.3-inch) landscape-format digital instrument cluster and a (probably 12-inch) portrait-format multimedia screen in the center console, combined in an inverted L-shaped ‘OpenR’ single screen.
The OpenR panel could also house the central air vents and improve the clean look of the dashboard. The base configuration(s) could be laid out slightly differently with a smaller (probably 9-inch) landscape-orientated multimedia screen. Another design feature borrowed from the Megane EV would be a compact square steering wheel.
Specifications
Renault Austral will ride on the same platform as the new Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Qashqai – CMF-C / D. Its length is 4.51 meters and, like the Japanese SUV, it will be produced only in petrol and electrified versions – without diesel. According to the French magazine largus.fr, Renault will offer the SUV in two mild-hybrid variants. One of them will have a 1.3-liter TCe engine with 12V mild-hybrid technology and will work in conjunction with a CVT. There will be two versions with an output of 140 hp. and 160 hp, the high-performance version(s) will be available with all-wheel drive. Another variant will have a 1.2-liter TCe engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology.
The Austral range will include a plug-in hybrid variant that uses a 1.2-liter TCe engine and electric power to deliver a combined 200 hp. In addition, Renault is working on a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 1.2-liter TCe engine and a rear electric motor for the AWD drive scheme and 280 hp. The company could unveil the Renault Austral PHEV in .
