Rivian is working on a new R2 platform

That the brand is working on a new platform called “R2” for its next wave of electric vehicles, many of which are expected to target affordable segments. The publication spoke to Scaringe, who said the new electric motors and bespoke 800-volt battery would be developed in-house.

During Rivian’s first-quarter earnings call on May 11, , Scaringe confirmed that the R2 platform is under development. He said the company is leveraging the experience of its R1 and RCV platforms in developing it. He wants the R2 platform to be highly available, capable, efficient, and cost-effective. It will borrow many technologies from the R1 and RCV platforms (EDV 700 and EDV 500), including the upcoming single-motor drive called Enduro, the upcoming LFP battery pack, and the next-generation network architecture and associated ECU family.

In addition, Rivian has registered trademarks for names such as R2T, R2X, R2A, R2C, R2S, and R2R. Considering that the R1S is an SUV, it is likely that the R2S will be a compact or mid-size electric SUV. The R2T could be a cheaper alternative to the R1T electric car.

Smaller SUVs relevant to North America, Europe and other regions can help Rivian become a serious competitor in the industry. The company could launch the Rivian R2S as a competitor to VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq to penetrate the European market. The Rivian mid-size SUV could well help make the brand more accessible in Europe.

This decade, China, Europe and the United States are expected to be the biggest volume drivers for electric vehicles. The Volkswagen Group, for example, expects China to be its largest electric vehicle market by 2030, followed by European countries and the United States in third place. Scaringe sees the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck and the Rivian R1S electric SUV as the brand’s “halo products.”

Production and release date

During Rivian’s Q1 earnings call, Scaringe said Rivian R2 production would take place in Georgia. If all goes according to plan, production at Rivian’s new plant will begin in . The European launch could occur in the same calendar year.

Rivian CFO Claire McDonough said during the same call that the upcoming Georgia factory would feature an R2 assembly line with an annual production capacity of 200,000 units. She hinted that this number would eventually double to 400,000 units.
