Subaru Solterra EV 2025: Price, consumption, picture, technical data.
The upcoming Subaru Solterra EV is an electric compact crossover and the Japanese automaker’s first EV. Fittingly, it will feature standard all-wheel drive, a Subaru staple. Subaru has partnered with Toyota to co-develop the platform for this EV SUV, which will also underpin other future models.
SUV Subaru Forester EV
The Solterra will be visually and mechanically similar to the upcoming Toyota bZ4X , but it will have a more aurally appealing name and likely some subtle Subaru styling motifs. While the bZ4X and Subaru Solterra EV don’t currently have much competition in the non-luxury compact segment, the landscape could change drastically when they hit showrooms next year.
What’s new ?
The Solterra crossover will be Subaru’s first electric vehicle when it launches in as a model.
Subaru hasn’t announced pricing for the Solterra, but we expect it to line up closely with the Toyota bZ4X, which we believe will start in the high $30,000s. Once we know how much the Subie will cost and learn more about the different trim levels and available features, we’ll be able to make a purchase recommendation.
Engine, transmission and performance
Aside from the fact that the Solterra will be all-electric and have all-wheel drive, we don’t know much about its powertrain or performance. Subaru’s partnership with Toyota on the project will likely see each company tap into the areas where it has the most institutional knowledge: Subaru is best known for its standard all-wheel drive systems, and Toyota has gained extensive experience with electrification since the advent of the Prius .
Range, charging and battery life
While Subaru hasn’t disclosed how big the Solterra’s battery is or how much usable capacity it has, the company estimates a range of more than 220 miles on a single charge. Subaru is also mum on the subject of charging times, saying only that the Solterra is compatible with DC fast chargers and “can provide a significant charge in under an hour.”
Interior, comfort and cargo
The Solterra’s interior features a high-mounted digital instrument panel, a large touchscreen for the infotainment system, and a raised center console with a rotary gearshift knob. The steep windshield, large side window, and panoramic sunroof give an airy feel.
The mix of attractive textures also contributes to an appealing aesthetic. Together with the various storage compartments, including the large trash can under the center console, the Solterra is a useful travel companion with up to 30 cubic meters of cargo space with the rear seat folded down.
Infotainment and connectivity
The Solterra’s infotainment system is available with a 12.3-inch touchscreen located in the center of the dashboard. Every model comes with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. The inclusion of a smartphone app allows users to remotely control the HVAC system to pre-condition the cabin or lock and unlock the doors, among other things. We also expect built-in navigation and possibly an upgraded stereo option to be on the list.
Safety and driver assistance functions
Every Solterra comes with a variety of standard driver-assist technologies, including automatic high beams and – for the first time on a Subaru – a 360-degree camera system. For more information on Solterra’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:
- Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist as standard
- Standard blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert
Subaru Solterra EV Price
Subaru has not yet released pricing information for the Solterra. The Japanese automaker will likely announce pricing for each trim level closer to the launch date. However, like the 2022 Toyota bZ4X, the Subaru Solterra is expected to have a starting price of around $32,500. Additionally, with the federal electric vehicle tax credit, the cost of the Solterra may be lower for some car buyers.
