Subaru WRX 2025: Price, consumption, picture, technical data.
Rally-inspired sport compacts are on the verge of extinction, but the next-generation Subaru WRX is set to reignite interest in this enthusiast-focused breed. With the death of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo years ago and the more recent exit of the Ford Focus RS, the WRX and more powerful WRX STI remain the only remaining options for fans of the World Rally Championship – at least until the next-gen VW Golf R arrives.
Sports car Subaru WRX
With the introduction of a new architecture designed to improve driving dynamics, the possibility of a more powerful turbocharged boxer engine, and the likelihood of a nicer interior, the Subaru WRX promises to be a big improvement over the previous version.
What’s new ?
Based on an official announcement that included a heavily veiled teaser image, Subaru will unleash the next-generation WRX for the model year. While there are plenty of details we don’t yet know, the above teaser and the spy photos we snapped, along with our well-informed speculation, have us chewing on the production-focused version, which will boast a big hood scoop and bulging fenders. Subaru has announced that it will unveil the WRX on August 19 at the New York auto show.
Engine, transmission and performance
We’re not entirely sure what engine will power the next WRX, but we suspect it’s the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four that motivates other Subaru models like the three-row Ascent. However, it will certainly be tuned to make more than its current 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. We’ve even heard rumors that it could make up to 400 horses and 361 lb-ft on the high-performance STI. Of course, the regular WRX would be less powerful, but it should still pack more than the current engine, which makes 268 horses and 258 lb-ft. What we can say with confidence is that the company’s ubiquitous all-wheel drive will continue to be standard. We also expect Subaru to again offer the WRX with a choice between a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) or a manual transmission. The switch to the Subaru Global Platform is also intended to give the sports compact a stiffer structure and a lower center of gravity than its predecessor.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Neither the EPA nor Subaru have announced fuel economy estimates for the Subaru WRX, so we don’t know how efficient the sedan will be in the city or on the highway. Once the official numbers are available and we have a chance to test one on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, part of our extensive testing program, we’ll be able to evaluate its real-world mpg. For more information on the WRX’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, comfort and cargo
We don’t expect Subaru to drastically change the interior design of the next WRX, but we do expect it to be updated with nicer materials and hopefully better soundproofing. There’s no shortage of desirable features carried over from the current generation, of course. We also expect the next WRX to offer a set of comfortable and supportive front seats, similar to the optional Recaro seats available on the previous model. However, we can only hope that Subaru retains the excellent outward visibility and spacious trunk of the old version. Photos of the camouflaged test car show plenty of glass area and a fairly large, conventional trunk.
Infotainment and connectivity
While we don’t expect the next WRX to come with the Subaru Legacy’s massive, vertically-aligned 11.6-inch touchscreen, it should feature a more modern infotainment system than the current generation. The list of popular features will likely include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as built-in navigation and USB ports for front and rear passengers.
Safety and driver assistance functions
While we can only guess what active safety systems Subaru will offer on the next WRX, the company’s suite of driver-assistance technology – called EyeSight – should still be available. For more information on the WRX’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:
- Available forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Available blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
- Available lane departure warning and lane keeping assist
Warranty and maintenance coverage
Subaru offers a competitive, if unspectacular, limited warranty on the powertrain. There’s also no free scheduled maintenance, but that’s not unusual in this segment of compact sports cars.
Price Subaru WRX
Subaru hasn’t said how much the next Subaru WRX and WRX STI will cost, but we expect each model to receive a price increase. We expect the regular version to start at around €30,000 (Euro) and the STI to open at around €40,000 (Euro).
