Tesla Roadster EV 2025: Price, interior, electric motor, picture.

The original Tesla Roadster put the all-electric automaker on the map, even if most Model S and Model X buyers don’t remember it. Originally slated , the new model hasn’t launched yet, leading us to believe it’s been delayed.

The second-generation Roadster outdoes its predecessor by adding two small rear seats, significantly more range and significantly higher levels of performance. Tesla CEO Elon Musk boasted a 1.9-second time and a top speed of 250 mph when he unveiled the Roadster concept in 2017 – numbers we very much hope will prove accurate when this sports car finally hits the market.

Electric motor, transmission and power

When the new Tesla Roadster was unveiled as a concept in November 2017, Musk touted some incredible performance numbers for this car, including a 60-mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed of more than 250 mph, and a quarter-mile time of just 8.8 seconds.

That’s outrageous. For reference, if that 60 mph time holds up, it means the Roadster is a full second faster than its main rival, the gasoline-powered McLaren 570S. Also during that conference, Musk noted that the Roadster will come with all-wheel drive as standard. This is less surprising. Tesla’s mainstream EV models use two electric motors – one in the front and one in the back – to power all four wheels, so it makes sense that we’d see the same setup for the Roadster.

Range, charging and battery life

The 200 kWh battery is said to offer up to 620 miles of range, but that figure will certainly only be achieved with very light use; doing some hot laps around the track will reduce that estimate considerably.

Interior, comfort and cargo

The Roadster is just a concept for now, and generally concepts change drastically as they develop into production models. As pictured, the Roadster Concept features a removable glass roof that you can store in the trunk.

It has four seats, but the rear ones look like they’re not suitable for adults, considering the Roadster’s dramatically sloping roofline. That said, we expect Tesla’s signature minimalist interior design to be repeated here.

Infotainment and connectivity

In the concept’s design, a large touchscreen stretches from the top of the dashboard to the center console, with a storage compartment underneath. No vehicle in Tesla’s lineup offers services like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Amazon Alexa compatibility, and we don’t expect that to change with the Roadster. In fact, if the infotainment system in the Model 3 sedan is any indication of what we’ll see in the Roadster, buyers shouldn’t expect to find AM radio or SiriusXM in that car. We think it’s likely Tesla will provide a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, Spotify integration, and a variety of visual entertainment apps like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube to keep drivers entertained while parked and charging.

Safety and driver assistance functions

Because the Roadster is still just a concept, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not had a chance to conduct crash tests. We expect Tesla to offer all of its latest and greatest driver-assistance technologies on the Roadster, including its famous Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system. Key safety features include:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard
  • Standard lane departure warning with lane keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode

Warranty and maintenance coverage

We expect the Roadster to offer the same standard warranty package as the rest of Tesla’s lineup, which includes an eight-year warranty on the car’s electric motors and battery pack. Unlike rivals like the Audi R8 or Jaguar F-Type, the Tesla probably won’t come with a free scheduled maintenance plan.

Tesla Roadster EV Price

Tesla plans to offer a base Roadster for €175,000 and a limited Founders Series for €44,000 more. We don’t have any details on what differentiates the two, other than the fact that only 1,000 Founders Series models will be built.
