Toyota GR 86 2025: More power and new opportunities for lovers of drive

The second-generation Toyota GR 86 is slated for the model year, and although it’s all-new, it follows the same rear-wheel drive formula as the first-generation car. Redesigned in collaboration with the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota GR 86 is powered by a boxer four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission.

This time, Toyota has addressed our main complaints with the last generation and given the GR 86 more horsepower . The new model is powered by a 2.4-liter flat-four engine that produces 228 horsepower, which is 23 horsepower more than the previous model’s 2.0-liter mill.

What’s new ?

After skipping the model year, the Toyota GR 86 will relaunch as a model after a complete redesign.
Toyota hasn’t said anything about pricing, nor has the company released a comprehensive list of the 86’s optional features. But the upgraded Premium model offers a host of compelling standard features, including 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, leather upholstery, a rear spoiler, and aluminum pedal covers.

Engine, transmission and performance

Like the first-generation model, the Toyota GR 86 features a naturally aspirated flat-four engine from Subaru. Acceleration was quite brisk in the previous model at 6.2 seconds to 100 km per hour, but the model should be a bit quicker thanks to a more powerful 2.4-liter engine with 228 hp. A six-speed manual continues to serve as the GR 86’s standard transmission, while a six-speed automatic is optional. When we get a chance to test the new GR 86 and its twin, the Subaru BRZ, we’ll update this story with test results and driving impressions.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Toyota GR 86 hasn’t received fuel economy estimates from the EPA, but the last generation received ratings of 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic. The manual model didn’t fare nearly as well. When we get a chance to put the new model through our 200-mile highway fuel economy test, we’ll update this story with the results. For more information on the 86’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, comfort and cargo

The Toyota GR 86 maintains the relative size and shape of the previous model. The GR 86 and Subaru BRZ are unique in the affordable sports car market as they are the only ones to offer two seats for four people. The rear seats, while not exactly comfortable or spacious, are nice to have. The Subaru and Toyota models appear to share their interiors, aside from some changes to the dashboard around the infotainment display.

Infotainment and connectivity

An 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard , replacing the smaller 7.0-inch display on the last-generation car; the GR 86 also features a 7.0-inch digital display that’s reconfigurable with Normal, Sport, and Track modes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and all models come with SiriusXM satellite radio with a free three-month trial. The base model comes with a six-speaker stereo, but the upgraded Premium trim has an eight-speaker setup.

Safety and driver assistance functions

The outgoing 86 offered little in the way of driver assistance features. Toyota will provide a number of safety technologies for the model, but only when the GR 86 is equipped with its optional automatic transmission. For more information on the GR 86’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:

  • Available automatic emergency braking
  • Available lane departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

The GR 86’s standard warranty package consists of three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage that extends to five years or 60,000 miles. Toyota’s two-year free maintenance policy is a nice perk that the BRZ and Mazda MX-5 Miata don’t match. All buyers also get a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association and free entry to any of that organization’s high performance driving events.

Price Toyota GR 86

With the added power and fresh styling, the Toyota GR 86 is expected to start at €29,000 or €30,000. That would put it largely in line with the more powerful but heavier Ford Mustang, but of course much cheaper than the Supra. The flagship Toyota sports car starts at around €44,000 with a turbo I-4 powertrain.
