Volkswagen Tiguan R 2025: price, consumption, picture, technical data.
There are many rumors pointing to the possibility of a Volkswagen Tiguan R being launched in . This is part of VW’s release of a series of new crossover and SUV vehicles that started in 2016.
Volkswagen Tiguan R
They are planning to offer a range of cars in the coming days and the Tiguan model is one of them. Not only that, but it has also been suggested that a top-range R-brand is also to come, giving fans more things to swoon over.
The original VW Tiguan model was a pioneer in its segment. As one of the first premium compact crossover cars, it managed to establish itself in the segment and always stood up to the upcoming competing models that never managed to reach the level of the Tiguan. However, since its launch in 2007, the Volkswagen Tiguan model has remained almost unchanged. The changes were often muted and there was not much going on when it came to redesigning the car.
However, the competition is catching up and we are facing a renaissance of vehicles coming from the German automaker. An updated Tiguan model is one of the wishes we have set ourselves.
Exterior spy shots of the Volkswagen Tiguan R.
As for the R brand, there were many rumors that an R-rated coupe would be produced and released separately from the Tiguan. But at the same time, this would mean more development, planning, a completely new boy and more costs. So it was immediately very suspicious that this idea could be implemented.
However, the latest spy photos show a camouflaged but beefed up Tiguan model, implying there’s an R badge underneath. It seems like they’re sticking to the standard crossover configuration this time around, and we’ve managed to get more information and offer it in our review for fans to know before the respective release date.
Update: With the news of the Volkswagen Tiguan R released some time ago, everyone was excited to see what VW is planning for its future. Everyone knows that they want to expand their range and will do so by issuing new SUV models. However, there hasn’t been much information about the R models they have.
People started putting two and two together and we soon realized that the latest range of SUV vehicles will include an R variant, namely the Tiguan R version. There were a lot of assumptions about how this could come about and we are still dealing with a lot of rumors when it comes to this car. But the bottom line is that it will happen. Volkswagen has made a great move with this setup and we are very happy to have it now.
When is the release date of the Tiguan R?
From the recent photos of the Volkswagen Tiguan R that we have received, we can judge that the model will not take too long to be manufactured. It looks almost ready for production and we can assume that the release date will even be available . Although Volkswagen has not yet released the details about this car and they are keeping it secret, there are already many leaks and we are sure that more will come in the wake of its official announcement.
Update: The previous review of the Volkswagen Tiguan R had a lot of assumptions and most of them were about the release date. Unfortunately, things are not getting any better as we are still not treated with an exact release date. The latest information says that the model will arrive in mid-. We are still confident of getting an earlier version that would bring us a model much sooner than expected. Fingers crossed as Volkswagen sometimes surprises its audience with extraordinary news regarding its new release.
Price list for the Tiguan R
The price of the Volkswagen Tiguan R has yet to be determined. It may be too early to say what the car will be priced at, and we don’t see it breaking the $50,000 mark like some of the most expensive rival models. But we do see it heading towards the €45,000 (Euro) mark even with the R badge.
External appearance and updates
It’s very difficult to say what the future Volkswagen Tiguan R model will look like. The current test mule wears a heavy camouflage paint job that prevents us from even hinting at what it might look like underneath. In a way, the design offers some seemingly aggressive features that point to an R-badged model in the first place. However, the best way to determine the future appearance of the VW Tiguan R model is based on the Cross Coupe GTE that made its debut in 2015.
While we don’t expect all the cues from that car to be carried over to the Tiguan car, there are a number of features that are likely to be used. We expect the model to inherit the beefy wheel arches, vented bonnet and more aggressive front bumper with larger intakes. There’s also the possibility of getting a sporty bumper with integrated exhaust pipes. The rear could benefit from a large spoiler sitting at the top of the rear of the car.
Perhaps this is wishful thinking in some sense, and since it is used on all production cars, a lot of it can be lost in the transition from concept model to production version, so there are a number of changes that can occur once the car reaches its final version.
Update: Our last assumptions about the Volkswagen Tiguan R have mostly proven correct. It will take the cues of the base Tiguan and upgrade it with the R badges of those models. However, other conformations have also appeared and besides these, some additional elements will go into the final design. Mainly, the Cross Coupe GTE concept is the mistake for the latest exterior cues.
This includes the same sloping roof and a prominent C-pillar previously seen on this car. This makes a lot of sense as it combines with the aggressive nature of the Tiguan R model. We are very excited to see what the vehicle will hold overall.
Interior changes
It can be quite difficult to predict the interior design of the Volkswagen Tiguan R. There are certain highlights we’re hoping to see, including an active instrument display, a suite of camera-based safety features, and a head-up display. This is a crossover model, so we can be sure that the rear seats will be part of the interior design. However, space and headroom could be an issue if VW decides to make this a performance-oriented car on the inside as well.
Update: The changes we will see on the Volkswagen Tiguan R inside will mostly mirror those of the base version. Tiguan has already introduced some great new features that will be seen on the inside.
The vehicle inherits the clean styling of its base form, which is mostly seen for the dashboard of the car. This will be really good as the dashboard is very well organized with all the HVAC controls neatly laid out in front of you. Not to mention, the base model has been updated with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, which makes most things much easier. Also, VW plans to introduce modern features that can only be compared to Audi’s Virtual Cockpit setup. They are copying the idea in a way, but not the design.
Powertrain options
If we think sensibly, the Volkswagen Tiguan R will likely carry over the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the Golf R version. This is probably the easiest and safest way to offer excellent performance from this model and give it the extra boost that the car may need. The potential output is thus 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to keep up with the current range of competing cars. The only problem is the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is at a disadvantage compared to what rivals offer.
Update: Our original assumption for the Volkswagen Tiguan R was that it would use the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Golf R model. But they will tweak it and give it more power and production. The vehicle will benefit from all these changes and will surely produce 320 horsepower and at least 300 pound-feet of twist. If we say that this will allow the car to reach a top speed of 250 km/h and a 0-60 km/h performance of around 5 seconds, we have got our hands on a pretty decent model.
There is still a lot to be added for the Volkswagen Tiguan R, but many new things about this car are coming out every day. Use our update above and our older review below and see what exactly the new Tiguan R has in store for you.
0-62 mph per hour acceleration and top speed
If the Volkswagen Tiguan R is equipped with this type of setup under the hood, the model will likely improve the acceleration rate compared to the current model. The acceleration is at a potential of 5.5 seconds needed to reach 100 km per hour from a standstill and a limited top speed of 155 mph. This feat will be possible mainly due to the light weight of the car.
Fuel consumption
Potential fuel economy for the Volkswagen Tiguan R is not yet available. The test will be made official once the engine is confirmed. We hope that prices will stay close to what we already have on hand. Any kind of improvement in fuel efficiency is possible due to the car’s lighter construction, but the engine’s increased power will not do as much to reduce the car’s gas consumption.
Dimensions Changes
There is a possibility that the car will increase its dimensions and we will get a larger Volkswagen Tiguan R. This could greatly benefit the already perplexed interior, but we do not know in what way they plan to modify the car. There have been some announcements that we are looking at an improvement in the car’s wheelbase by 3.5 inches and an increase in the overall size by 5 inches. These numbers may provide enough space for the interior and make it much more comfortable. In this case, we see a possible overall length of 182 inches and a wheelbase of 109.1 inches.
Safety specifications
Confirmation about the safety system for the Volkswagen Tiguan R is expected to come once the interior is finalized. The interior of the car will include the latest safety equipment and will likely carry over the current setup that we already have in the version we have now. However, as time goes on, we also expect a number of improvements that will be updated and give us an expanded range of features that will likely make things much smoother and better.
Competing models
The list of vehicles that are potential rivals of the Volkswagen Tiguan R is not that long. However, there are a number of vehicles that already successfully compete in the premium crossover segment and can pose a great threat to the upcoming VW Tiguan R version. These are, of course, the Mercedes GLA45 AMG model and the Audi RS Q3 car, which already have a lot of potential. We will have to see what the latest Tiguan R offers to compete with the given models.
